Jun. 28th, 2006 05:03 pmThis weekend, I'm going hoooome! Since I have Tuesday off for the holiday, I'm having Lisa work for me on Monday (thanks!) and I get to stay home for ages and ages. Makes it more worth it to drive the 3 1/2 hours....
Yesterday, Sarah came and visited me! We saw X3 (my second time). I think I liked it more than the first time, since I knew what to expect going on. Not that I didn't like it the first time, it just was completely different than the previous movies and a bit shocking. This time, less shock, and more just watching things unfold ;). And looking over to see Sarah's reactions, like during the scene with Warren Worthington III as a kid. Then we went to EZs - yummy milkshake, burger and fries/onion rings. I coud barely finish it all, but I just kept on truckin' until I did.
Need to finish Vergil reading tonight. I got a good start on it last night, so it won't be too bad.
Next week are the premieres of Monk and Psych on USA - there goes another night of the week ;)
A week after that is my birthday, and a week after that we move out of the house.... bizarre! Time is passing too quickly.

Do I have anything important to say? I don't really think so....
Oh, my weekend was good. I spent a very long weekend in Austin - got there Thursday night, didn't return until Sunday afternoon (but very long in a good way....)
Had good times with the family - we had an awesome game of ultimate, mainly awesome because our team owned (Jeff plays ultimate all the time....) So that was fun, and I got some good exercise in as well. I got a "Keep Austin Weird" shirt on the Drag, with money my grandparents had provided each of us for the shopping trip. I hung out with some old friends from high school - my first real time on Sixth Street, and we went to Amy's, where we saw one guy hurl a scoop of ice cream across the street to another, who caught it in a cup while riding a unicycle. How awesome is that? I did my laundry at my aunt's house, and my grandma insisted on helping me fold it, despite my protestations. I went to BN with my aunt, and got a gift card out of it ;). Anything else of note? Well, I got to see all of my dad's side of the family, which is fun. My mom had to stay home with the dog, which is not so fun. My dad got a new truck last week, but I haven't even seen a picture of it yet. It's an '04 Ford Ranger, Edge series.
Well, at some point I really should do my Vergil. I'll get to it in a few hours ;).
At 1 AM, I have to watch The 4400. I guess I'll just have the volume down pretty low so others can sleep... but it's my last chance to catch this week's episode.
Work has been interesting this week. I'll just leave it at that.

Why am I still a slacker?
Jun. 14th, 2006 09:21 pmSo, I didn't even start my Vergil reading for tomorrow until after dinner tonight, because Charles de Lint is evil and writes awesome books, which makes a bad combination when combined with my total lack of will-power. Also an awesome combination, but bad when it comes to finishing my work ahead of time. But then, if it hadn't been Pharr Vergil that I was reading, I'm sure I would have at least started yesterday. But knowing that it will only take 2 1/2 hours or so doesn't make me worry too much. I'll probably do 100 lines or so tomorrow, so that I won't have to do too much more tonight.
So yeah, I bought de Lint's Widdershins at Half Price the other day. I'd gone to look for French and German stuff, but right away I found this, his brand new book, in their new/recent book section, and I just had to get it of course. It's a story of a couple of awesome characters from his other work, and I just got totally wrapped up in it, which I think is a really good indication that I enjoyed it ;). De Lint combines Celtic and Native American mythology in a modern day setting, and it's just awesome. I really wish my descriptive vocabulary went beyond "awesome", but that's just too bad.
Kate found out today that she got into UCC. Yay! We (the house) had a celebratory dinner at Olive Garden.... which was good, but I spilled my drink :(. Arg.
I did almost 30 lines of Homer today at work, which is my best day yet. It makes me happy that I'm getting faster, and that some words are appearing often enough that I don't have to gloss them anymore, which really helps.
Sometime in the next couple days I'm supposed to head to Austin to visit with family. It's either tomorrow or Friday that they're heading over from Houston, but I guess no one knows quite when that's going to be yet. I'd really like to know, so I can know whether or not I'm working Friday, but I guess I'll just wait until they let me know. There's some piece of mail waiting for me from UCLA Graduate Studies - I'd like to know what it is as soon as possible, thanks. ;)
Okay, enough random rambling for now. Oh, the PC(USA) General Assembly starts tomorrow, not that any of you care, but I'm excited :)

In which I ramble
Jun. 12th, 2006 12:37 pmFor some reason I keep getting logged out of lj. Annoying, as I tend to forget this password. But now I remember :)
So, yesterday, first of all, I actually made it to church! Amazing, I know. I love when Francois gets all serious about some sort of Presbytery business that was reported in the paper, telling the congregation to ask him or someone else who went about it if they want more details, rather than jumping to conclusions based on what was reported. I know it had to do with a man in Austin who was accepted as a member of a church, despite professing that he did not believe in God, etc. So, a bit of a scandal having a professed atheist as a member of a Christian church. I don't yet know what was decided or what was reported.... maybe I'll have to go ask Francois about it later this week ;).
After church, I came back to the house and had lunch - my Swiss cheese had started getting moldy. Boo. Then, Kate and I spent almost 2 hours putting together the desk that I am now sitting at. It had a lot of pieces and, as I just said, took forever. But now it's all together and I actually have somewhere in my room that I can sit and do work - it's been very nice reading my Greek here, with an actual surface to work on and such. But yeah, this desk is not coming apart in a month or two months - way too much work. Hopefully Jeff can bring his truck here to get it, or if not, maybe I can convince Aunt Nan to come down from Austin for it.
The season premiere of The 4400 was last night. It was two hours long, and crazy. I'm looking forward to this season. With everyone's powers getting stronger, it's kind of like the X-Men, as Beth said. But hey, I love the X-Men, so I'm excited ;). Tonight is the season premiere of The Closer, my other favorite show from lats summer. I'm so excited. And it's set in LA, so watching it is almost like homework, right? Ha.
Anyway, I should take my shower and such and head in to work. Maybe I'll actually work a little extra today, like Lisa does pretty much every day. Can't make them think I'm a total slacker ;). Of course, they already know this from the last few years, but whatever....
And look, I've actually written a not-completely-short entry, even if I didn't have all that much to say of any importance.
Oh, and I bought a book this weekend, Moonlight & Vines by Charles de Lint. Like the new editions of most of his books, this one has a nearly-naked woman on the front, standing in a sort of dead-looking tree. The covers are attractive, but it's a bit too close to the half-naked busty warrior woman covers that try to draw in all the teenage fanboys for me to really like it. Ah well. His writing is so great, though. Even if it has all been about death so far ;). I really liked the last story I read (this is a short story collection; he also has a bunch of novels set in this fictional city, Newford.) Anyway, I'd best get a move on.

Jun. 5th, 2006 12:53 amJust over 50 lines to go... I'm going to do them in the morning. Today's productivity was impeded by a marathon of The 4400 on USA, preparing for the season premiere next Sunday, but I still managed to get through about another 200 lines today. So yeah, this pace is tiring, but basically doable, I guess.

Jun. 2nd, 2006 04:55 pmOkay... reading Book 1 of the Odyssey by Monday. This should be a *fun* weekend :)
On the plus side, I love San Antonio gas prices. It kind of makes me mad how expensive gas is at home, where half the people work for one or another of the oil companies... on the other hand, maybe that's why they know they can charge so much - they'll still get the business from those people. Oh well. I'll enjoy my $2.64, as I was paying $2.89 at home... although I'm not sure I ever actually bought gas at home... my dad filled up my car once, and that may have been the only time I got gas in Houston. So, it's at least nice to to have to look at the expensive gas prices anymore ;)

Sad Times...
Jun. 1st, 2006 11:01 pmI'm upset... just thinking about what moving to California will mean.
No Taco Cabana.
No Blue Bell ice cream.
No Dos Mas, Seabrook Classic, Tookie's, Main Street Pizza, or any of the other many places that I love.
And of course, none of the important people in my life, but I'm just thinking more of food at the moment ;)
I guess I'll just have to eat a whole lot in the next few months :P

May. 29th, 2006 09:24 pmI'm supposed to be sorting/packing at the moment, as I'm heading to San Antonio tomorrow... but I really hate the whole packing/sorting to-do. So, for the moment, I am posting here instead :)
I really have nothing important to say, though.
So, I guess I'm done.
That was quite a failed attempt at avoiding my work.

May. 16th, 2006 05:08 pmSo, I'm home. Have been for a couple days.
Was recently labelled a flip-flopper by my brother. Told him I'd rather be a flip-flopper than an idiot who refuses to change his mind when new facts come to light. I'm so nice, really.
I feel lazy.... both of my brothers are off working right now - Erik is mowing lawns, and Jeff is training at Space Center Houston. And I woke up just before 2, just now took a shower, and am sitting here watching Jilly eat dinner.
Poor Jilly... her leg got all swollen over the weekend and then last night it swelled up (sidenote - I really want the past tense of swell to be swole or something...) until the incision burst open.... so, she went back to the vet today, and now she has one of those bonnet things around her head. It makes me sad. Also kind of funny, though.
OK, back to reading, methinks.
